On February 27, join AES’ Philadelphia Chapter for the latest installment of Dolby Atmos 2024: a monthly webinar featuring top producers and engineers who work extensively with immersive technology. Their ongoing mission is to elevate the craft of Dolby Atmos music productions by promoting a thriving creative community working in the field.

Hosted by Marc A. Gallo, the webinar will feature a Q&A with Grammy-nominated producer & engineer Ryan Ulyate. Ulyate has been recording, mixing and producing music professionally since 1978. In 2005, he began a decade-long collaboration with Tom Petty that included mix and production credits on the Mojo (2010) and Hypnotic Eye (2014) studio albums. Both albums were later released on limited-edition audio-only Blu-Ray discs featuring his high-resolution stereo & 5.1 surround sound mixes.

In 2020, he upgraded his Topanga-based studio for Dolby Atmos monitoring and has since remixed Petty’s Greatest Hits (1993), Wildflowers (1994), Angel Dream (1996), Live At The Fillmore (1997), and Mojo (2010) records in the new format.

Ryan Ulyate Act 3 Dolby Atmos

Ulyate’s latest project is Act 3, his debut album as a solo artist. Based on his love for conceptual works like The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) and produced especially for Dolby Atmos, Act 3 is designed to take the listener on a 45-minute immersive audio journey.

In addition to immersive streaming on platforms such as Apple Music and Tidal, the album is also available as a high-resolution digital download through IAA’s online shop. The Dolby Atmos mix was created by Ulyate himself and mastered by Michael Romanowski at Coast Mastering.

In November 2023, Act 3 was nominated for the Grammy award for Best Immersive Audio Album. Additionally, Ulyate’s Dolby Atmos mix of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits was crowned winner of IAA’s 2024 Listener’s Choice Award in the streaming category.

At the webinar, Ryan will discuss his unique approach to mixing in Dolby Atmos and how he tackles bringing classic Heartbreakers songs like “Refugee” and “Free Fallin’” into the new format. His philosophy is simple: "Just put people inside the music and let the music do the work.”

With Act 3, Ulyate has undoubtedly proven that his talent isn’t just limited to the mixing board. The songs are catchy and accessible, with great musicianship and a powerful immersive experience that rivals the best material out there (from acclaimed mixers like Steven Wilson, Bruce Soord, Bob Clearmountain, etc). If you’ve got a 7.1.4 (or greater) setup, we’d definitely consider it demo material!

Take a quick listen beforehand to some Tom Petty and Act 3 tracks in Atmos, then come forward with your questions or observations for a fun and passionate discussion!
