Unspoken Words is Max Cooper’s sixth studio album and the latest in an impressive back catalog that dates back to 2007, when he combined his studies in computational biology with his work as a DJ at a local techno club. In the years since, Cooper has carved out a unique place for himself as an audiovisual artist with a scientific doctorate and an international reputation as a leading electronic musician.
Unspoken Words is Cooper’s most revealing work to date, taking listeners through an audiovisual journey with personal stories of reflection, acceptance, confrontation, idealism, and rejection. It is a meditative meta-narrative about the artists’ inner struggle for expression and our collective journey to find our place in the world. The album provides a common ground, a unifying space for anyone facing inner turmoil and feeling the need for greater connection and expression.
Here are Cooper’s own words on the process of writing Unspoken Words:
“I find that existence in my head is a sometimes beautiful, sometimes intense, sometimes raw, chaotic, confusing and relentless experience, and I tried to put as much of that feeling and form into the album as I could.”
As for the Dolby Atmos mix, Cooper worked in collaboration with Will Cohen and Niels Orens to bring a truly interactive experience together: "If you’re listening with Atmos headphones with head tracking and you turn your head, elements that sounded central and mono will expand into stereo with new information, while other elements will collapse, so that the listening experience is dependent on the direction in which you face and the music becomes interactive."
