From film director Derrick Borte and rock artist A Bad Think comes a unique, intimate look at how music in immersive audio gets made.

Frontman Michael Marquart, whose last 5.1 album earned him a Grammy nomination, takes viewers through a tour of his studio and creative process. Steve Genewick, head of Atmos at Capitol Studios, illustrates how object-based audio works. Dave Way, four-time Grammy winner, describes how special it is to collaborate with the best in the business.

Through the lens of renowned musicians, producers, and engineers, this short documentary goes behind-the-scenes in the studio as they all come together to bring Lifelike, A Bad Think's new album, to life in Dolby Atmos. Sean Hurley, Victor Indrizzo, Dave Way, Michael Marquart and Jeremy Stacey.

Album

Lifelike is the anticipated new album in 5.1 Dolby Atmos from A Bad Think, coming out April 2, 2021. Mixed by Bob Clearmountain, Dave Way, and Steve Genewick, Lifelike features Michael Marquart alongside drummer Jeremy Stacey, bassist Sean Hurley, guitarists Fernando Perdomo and Kirk Hellie, and keyboardist Phil Shenale.

A Bad Think received a “Best Immersive Audio Album” Grammy nomination in 2020 for the 5.1 surround sound album The Savior. Marquart has always been a versatile musician, touring early on as a drummer for Grammy-winning band A Flock of Seagulls and then establishing his own studio, Windmark Recording. He has worked with many outstanding artists including No Doubt, The Connells, Buffalo Tom, Love Spit Love, Our Lady Peace, The Nixons, and Dishwalla.[

Michael Marquart (Producer)

Michael Marquart (also known as Mike) is a Grammy-nominated American music producer and guitarist based in Los Angeles. In the mid 2000s, Marquart founded the rock band A Bad Think and his 8th studio album, The Savior, was nominated for a Grammy in 2019. Marquart is the founder and owner of Windmark Recording, which he manages with his daughter Samantha. Marquart's Windmark Recording has recorded many notable musical artists, including Coldplay, Jeezy, J. Cole, YG, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Kanye West, and Kendrick Lamar.

Dave Way (Producer)

Dave Way is an American producer, mixer and recording engineer based in Los Angeles. He has worked with many notable artists including Fiona Apple, Beck, Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and more. He is a four-time Grammy-winner and songwriter. He has mixed music for films and television, including Sons of Anarchy, The Bodyguard, School Of Rock, Deepwater Horizon, Superbad, 50 First Dates, and more. An alumnus of Berklee College of Music, he works mainly at his own private Dolby Atmos equipped studio called Waystation Studio.

Bob Clearmountain (Mixer)

Bob Clearmountain is an American producer, mixer and recording engineer. He has worked with many prominent names in music including Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Bryan Adams, Robbie Williams, Toto, Bon Jovi, and hundred more. He has been nominated for six Grammy Awards and won a Latin Grammy Award in 2007 for Best Male Pop Vocal Album for his work with engineering Ricky Martin's "MTV Unplugged." He has also won an Emmy and seven TEC Awards for "Best Recording Engineer", two others for "Best Broadcast Engineer", one special "Les Paul Award" and a Monitor Award for the Rolling Stones' Voodoo Lounge pay-per-view show.

Steve Genewick (Engineer)

Steve Genewick is a mixer and recording engineer. With thirty years of experience, he has had the pleasure of working at legendary recording studios around the world such as Capitol Studios, United Recording, Village Recorders in LA, Abbey Road Studios in London, and La Fabrique in France. He has worked with many artists like Elton John, Bastille, and Trisha Yearwood. Steve was also amongst the first of studio mixers to begin mixing music in Dolby Atmos. In 2017 he received the Pensado Award for Best Recording Engineer, and he was a part of the Universal Audio and Capitol Studios Team that won a TEC Award for the Capitol Chambers plugin at the 2020 NAMM Conference.

Derrick Borte (Director)

Derrick Borte is a German-born American filmmaker known for the dark comedy The Joneses (2010), which he wrote, directed, and produced. Starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny, the film was his directorial debut. In 2019, he co-wrote and directed American Dreamer, a thriller starring Jim Gaffigan and Robbie Jones. The film was shot in his hometown of Virginia Beach, where he partnered with ODU and the Virginia Film Office in a workforce initiative to let 25 students intern on the film. Borte recently directed Russell Crowe, Caren Pistorius, and Gabriel Bateman, in the 2020 film Unhinged.

Scott Lochmus (Producer)

Scott Floyd Lochmus is an American producer and director who has worked with artists such as Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Jim Gaffigan, Michael Shannon, Prince, and The Rolling Stones. Lochmus has served as founder and owner of Jack My Dog production company since 1996 and as co-founder and partner of Storyland Pictures since 2009. Lochmus received the Soho House Script Award in 2018, the Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award in 2018, the Telly Award & the NY International Independent Film & Video Festival.
