By: Phillip W. Serna (Dolby Atmos MKV + MP4)
Type: Digital Download
Over the last decade Phillip Serna has emerged among the nation’s leading advocates of the viol – the viola da gamba. Co-founding Black Tulip & ViolMedium, he’s collaborated with distinguished historical-performance ensembles including the Bella Voce Sinfonia, the Callipygian Players, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, the Newberry Consort, the Second City Musick, et al. Often labelled as 'the last gambist' and a 3rd-generation viol performer, Carl Friederich Abel (1723-1787), was son of Christian Ferdinand Abel, performer in court ensembles led by Johann Sebastian Bach. After studies with Bach Leipzig and a post to Johann Adolf Hasse's court orchestra in Dresden, Abel joined the London court of Queen Charlotte where he befriended Bach's son, Johann Christian with whom he established the Bach-Abel Concerts running from 1765-1781. These recordings were performed, recorded, mixed & mastered December 2023 by Phillip W. Serna at Dwarf Star Audio in Plainfield, IL.
