First released through Young Records in January 2022, CAPRISONGS was English singer-songwriter FKA Twigs’ debut mixtape. Featuring guest appearances from outside artists like Pa Salieu, the Weeknd, Shygirl, Dystopia, Rema, Daniel Caesar, Jorja Smith, and Unknown T, the mixtape pulls together disparate threads of art-pop, R&B, hip-hop, trap, and dance music to produce a wholly-unique result.

CAPRISONGS received critical acclaim throughout 2022, appearing on a number of publications’ year-end ‘Best of’ lists including Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, GQ, NPR, and Rolling Stone. The album additionally managed to chart within in the US Billboard Top-200, peaking at #9 on the US Top Alternative Albums listing and #8 on the UK Independent Albums chart.

CAPRISONGS is also FKA Twigs’ first studio release to receive an immersive mix, courtesy of Grammy-winning producer and engineer Mike Dean. Throughout his career, Dean has worked with notable artists such as Kanye West, Travis Scott, Jay-Z, Drake, Madonna, and Lana Del Rey. In 2021, he upgraded his studio to Dolby Atmos and has since completed a number of titles in the format including Brent Faiyaz’s WASTELAND (2022), Travis Scott’s Utopia (2023), Beyoncé’s Renaissance (2023), and more.

The Dolby Atmos mix of CAPRISONGS is just as adventurous as the music would suggest, with individual components like percussion, synthesizers, harmony vocals, and other effects scattered all throughout the listening space. Though it’s been available via streaming services since 2022, we at IAA are thrilled to now offer the album as an exclusive immersive digital download through our online shop!

The opening track “Ride The Dragon” kicks off with typing sound effects primarily in the side speakers, before Twigs’ voice in the front alternates with a second distorted vocal from the side and rear surrounds. Percussion is woven into all seven speakers at ear-level, while additional vocal effects and synthesizers float in from above. Pa Salieu’s narration in “Honda” extends from the front stage up into the height array, with the choir sound mostly confined to the side surrounds.

“Lightbeamers” is certainly a highlight from an immersive standpoint, as the keyboard appears completely isolated in the side surrounds and the height channels are engaged heavily for additional vocal effects. The Atmos mix generally makes sparing use of the center speaker, instead opting to focus the lead vocals to the front ‘phantom’ center.

Immersive Audio Album offers immersive digital downloads in the lossless Dolby TrueHD format. While streaming services offer convenience and access to a vast library of music, they also severely compress the audio to save bandwidth. With lossless TrueHD, the inner detail and sonic clarity is much better preserved for home listeners.
