The Grammy Award for Best Immersive Audio Album, formerly Best Surround Sound Album, was first awarded in 2005. Since then, the Recording Academy has annually recognized the best of the best in immersive audio experiences. This year, due to COVID-19, nominations and awards for the category have been postponed - making it the only category to be missing from the upcoming 63rd Grammy Awards.
Rather than let 2020 pass with yet another disappointment, we decided to hold our own virtual awards to recognize the artists, producers, mixers, and engineers who have invested their talents and energies to making immersive music this year.

What happened to the 2021 Grammy category for Best Immersive Audio Album?

There will be no nominations or award given out this year due to limitations caused by COVID-19. It is the only category that will be missing from the upcoming Grammy Awards. The Recording Academy announced that the “judging of the entries in this category has been postponed until such time that we are able to meet in a way that is appropriate to judge the many formats and configurations of the entries and is safe for the committee members.”

What are the Listeners’ Choice Awards?

Immersive Audio Album has decided to host its own fan awards to honor and recognize the exceptional bodies of work released this year. While the Grammy category for Best Immersive Audio will be presented in 2022, we didn’t want to wait that long! And who better to judge the music than the fans themselves?

Who can participate?

Anyone! We ask that you submit your selections based on having listened to the album in a proper surround sound or immersive audio environment. Whether it’s your home theater setup, your binaural headphones, or your car, there are many ways to listen to music in immersive formats and we want your opinion!
