Logitech is not a brand that is going to get audiophiles’ pulses racing at a mere mention. The electronics brand has long been associated with computer peripherals, and their range includes some small and compact options like laptop speakers, which may be functional, but aren’t that impressive.

The z906 can’t be ignored, and shouldn’t be bundled in with the budget electronic equipment the brand is known for. This is a genuinely powerful and respectable surround sound system.

One look at the price tag compared to other models and it isn’t hard to understand the appeal, but that doesn’t mean the speakers can’t enhance your home audio setup.

The System

One of the first things you might notice with these speakers is the power. A 1000 watt peak rating is really high, and these speakers shocked us a little with the loudness and bass response.

The central control console feeds six speakers in total to provide this power, one sub, four speakers, and a center channel speaker which acts somewhat like a tweeter.

The audio inputs are easy to connect to a variety of devices, and there is a coaxial, RCA, and optical option. However, the inputs are also where we find a weakness. There is no HDMI support.

If you are buying an immersive audio system purely for music, this might not be such a problem, but so many people love the fact that immersive soundbars and systems can now be easily connected to your Blu Ray player or TV to play Dolby Atmos and other 3D sound while you watch the latest blockbuster.

It’s a good idea to think about whether this will be a downer for you. How do you plan to connect your immersive system?

The Sound

For the price tag, the sound is solid.

The six speaker setup gives a wide soundstage and lets you perform those little tweaks to perfect positioning and enjoy the best possible audio. The sound is Dolby Digital, and DTS certified, as well as THX certified (rare for an immersive system).

The remote control lets you switch between 2.1, 4.1, or 3D surround sound options depending on the type of media you are listening to, and change each channel without leaving your seat.

The sound is powerful, and bass-heavy, which makes for some good experiences with audio-visual content.

It wouldn’t be fair to say the fidelity of each speaker is amazing, but when you consider that this is a six speaker sound on a budget, it is worth considering for an affordable setup. Six speakers work together to build a soundstage that may do much of the Dolby Atmos and DTS content out there justice. Far from perfect, but not disappointing either.

Summary

These speakers could easily be improved with an EQ control and HDMI support, which is frustrating for a lot of users. However, if these aren’t high on your priorities, and you want a loud and powerful home setup that doesn’t break the bank, the Logitech z906 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers may fit the bill.
